The Spa Town of Buxton is the most important town in the Western and Central area of the Peak. Buxton lies in a natural bowl and at 300m above sea level, is the highest town of it’s size in England.

The Romans came here, attracted by the warm springs, which emerge near the River Wye with a constant temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. They built the baths here and for the following centuries these springs have been a major source of importance and income for Buxton.
Buxton is also famous for ‘ The Crescent’ constructed by the 5th Duke of Devonshire in 1780. In 1785 he built large stables, which was then converted to a hospital, aptly named ‘The Devonshire’. In 1880 he erected a huge dome over the building which, for many years, was the largest un-supported man made dome in the world.

From this the town boomed, large buildings and hotels were built like the Opera house and the famous Palace hotel.

The town today has a full range of shops, centred around a shopping arcade built over the culverted River Wye, just off Spring Gardens. There is a market every Tuesday and Saturday. There are numerous hotels and restaurants. Buxton has a ‘Well-Dressing and carnival which starts on the second Sunday in July and an international festival of Opera from mid July to early August.
