This small town, on the fringe of the old Forest of the Peak, lies in the northwest angle of Derbyshire on the high land that sweeps up to the High Peak. The highest point of which, Kinder Scout, lies about six miles north.

It’s name, meaning ‘Chapel in the forest’ is derived from a small chapel, built in 1225 by the keepers of the forest on land bought from the Crown, and dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury.

The parish church was built in the fourteenth century on the site of the earlier chapel and is a stone building of considerable interest.
Chapel en le Frith is situated on a high ridge and is surrounded on all sides by lofty hills, the market place standing at an altitude of 776 feet above sea level.
It is a picturesque place and attractive by reason of it’s situation and it’s old inns, market cross and stocks.

The town today has a full range of shops with market day every Thursday. There is an annual carnival with celebrations held over a week period to include family fun day out in Memorial Park and the ancient tradition of the ‘Dressing of the Wells’. This takes place within the months of June and July.

Situated close to the town is an 18 hole golf course, cricket and local football ground. There is also crown green bowling, with angling and sailing at nearby Coombs Reservoir.
